Statiegeld Nederland increases recycling percentage and online findability with location intelligence from Localyse
Statiegeld Nederland, part of Verpact, is the organization behind the collection and recycling of deposit-return packaging in the Netherlands. Their mission is to achieve the government’s recycling targets and contribute to a circular economy.
The Challenge
90% recycling target at risk
The Dutch government has a clear requirement: 90% of all deposit-return packaging must be collected and recycled. Statiegeld Nederland was stuck at 72% and faced the risk of a significant fine. One of the core problems was the poor online findability of the thousands of collection points. Besides the well-known supermarkets, there were tens of thousands of other locations such as sports clubs, hospitality venues, and public vending machines that remained invisible to the general public.
The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) set a strict deadline: within 12 weeks, all 44,000 locations had to be findable online to increase the collection rate.
The solution
A three-stage rocket for maximum impact
In collaboration with Onemap (also part of GeoSquare), Localyse delivered a pragmatic and effective solution in three phases:
Phase 1: A solid foundation with high-quality location data Everything starts with correct data. The provided list of +/- 44,000 addresses was diverse and contained inaccuracies. Localyse cleaned, deduplicated, and validated this data. Using the Google Maps Platform Places API, the data was then enriched with essential information such as opening hours, phone numbers, and exact coordinates. This process of address validation and data enrichment created a reliable and complete location database, ready for publication.
Phase 2: A user-friendly Deposit Locator Based on the enriched data, an interactive map, the ‘Deposit Locator’, was developed and implemented on the Statiegeld Nederland website in record time. This locator, built on the Onemap platform, is fully responsive and offers an optimal user experience on both desktop and mobile. Key features include:
- Smart filters: Easily search by type of collection point.
- Automatic zoom: The map immediately centers on the user’s location.
- Navigation: A direct link to Google Maps for seamless directions.
The result
Improved findability and a step closer to 90%
Within the tight 12-week deadline, Localyse delivered a complete solution that yielded immediate results:
- Successful launch: The Deposit Locator was successfully launched, fully in line with Statiegeld Nederland’s corporate identity.
- Improved data quality: A structured process has been established to update the location data bi-weekly.
- Increased online visibility: The collection points are now easy to find via the own website with a Google Maps experience, leading to more website traffic and a higher collection rate.
Thanks to the smart use of location intelligence and the Google Maps Platform, Statiegold Nederland has taken a crucial step towards achieving its 90% recycling target and promoting a sustainable future.
