The smart world behind Google Maps: Localyse on NPO Radio 1

Last week, we were guests of Jurgen van den Berg on Villa VdB at NPO Radio 1, where our colleague Jeffrey Benning, Google Maps Specialist (evangelist), explained how Google Maps has grown into an almost indispensable tool in our daily lives. But behind that seemingly perfect map lies a complex system that is constantly being improved—often in collaboration with partners like us.

Even small changes to the map can have a big impact. In Giethoorn, moving the famous “Giethoorn pin” led to a loss of revenue for local businesses. In Zandvoort, residents tried to “close” certain roads through digital adjustments to keep tourists away, after which Google restored the situation thanks to user reports. In critical environments, such as hospitals, accurate map information can even be a matter of life and death.

Jeffrey emphasized the importance of translating the physical world into the digital map as accurately as possible. From building outlines and access roads to kiss-and-ride zones—everything must be correct to avoid confusion. For businesses, this means: make sure your location data is always up-to-date. Localyse helps organizations manage this at scale, so customers and travelers never face unpleasant surprises or navigation issues.
